Tomaszów Mazowiecki is a city situated in the very heart of Poland, in the voivodeship of Łódź. It covers the area of 4,130 ha and has 60,724 permanent residents. The tourist appeal of the city stems from five rivers flowing through it, namely Pilica, Wolbórka, Czarna-Bielina, Piasecznica and Lubochenka, as well as Spalski Forest and nearby Sulejowski Reservoir. Also the Ice Arena, the first to be erected in Poland, arouses much interest.
The appeal of the natural environment of Tomaszów Mazowiecki and its vicinity results from large forest complexes, landscape parks, rivers and water reservoirs as well as wildlife reserves. The Pilica river is an important component of Tomaszów Mazowiecki’s landscape. Its meandering bed creates numerous picturesque islands, broads and bends. It is one of the fastest lowland rivers in Europe, creating favourable conditions for canoeing. In the south-western part of Tomaszów Mazowiecki one can find a "Blue Springs" Wildlife Reserve. It is situated in the Pilica river valley, on its right bank, in the buffer zone of Sulejowski Landscape Park and covers the area of ca. 29 ha. The springs are two karst springs separated by an island. Each of them has over a dozen tiny geysers. The water spouting from the springs takes bluish and greenish colour.
In the vicinity of the "Blue Springs" Reserve there is a Pilica River Open-air Museum aimed at documenting and popularising the rich natural, historical and cultural heritage of the Pilica river and its tributaries. The tourist project of Tomaszów Mazowiecki is called "Tomaszowska Okrąglica" and comprises: "Blue Springs" Reserve, Pilica River Open-air Museum and "Nagórzyckie Caves" Underground Tourist Route, the first facility of that type in central Poland. The tourist offer of Tomaszów Mazowiecki is complemented by numerous cycling paths, connecting the city with neigboring tourist attractions. Among them, it is worth mentioning a hiking and cycling route connecting the "Blue Springs" and the Pilica River Open-air Museum with the route going round Sulejowski Reservoir.
In 2012, as part of the Local Revitalisation Programme, a reconstruction of Kościuszko Square, one of the most important components in the public city space, started and it was completed in two years. As a result the so-called city parlour was created, i.e. a showpiece of a new image of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, pedestrian precinct, sites for social integration, tourism, recreation and rest, meetings and cultural events. Also the first Polish indoor ice rink was created in Tomaszów.
The facility comprises indoor skating rink, multi-functional indoor sports ground, tennis courts, permanent and movable stands. The facility is suitable for organising national and international sports competitions in the field of speed skating (Polish Championships, World Cup, European and World Championships). It also meets the requirements related to organising concerts and exhibitions. In winter, public slides and other sports events will be organised here. The facility will also be used in summer, e.g. as a roller blading rink. In Tomaszów, also amateur sports are supported. Every runner may attend free classes led by Wanda Panfil (marathon participant, world master) who teaches how to run correctly and efficiently. There is also room for sports emotions related to football, with RKS Lechia from Tomaszów playing in the third league, and to volleyball (KS Lechia in the first league).
Tomaszów also has an extensive cultural offer. Municipal Community Centre offers many workshops, meetings, exhibitions and concerts. They are also organised by the Municipal Office. The most famous events include obviously the Days of Tomaszów, Lokalni Niebanalni Picnic, with nearly all non-governmental city-operating organisations taking part, or Love Polish Jazz Festival, attended by the most famous stars of this music genre.
